A Tail of Two Planes | The Plucky Squire Game Review

One of the most anticipated indie releases has been out for a minute, so, how does it stand up to the pre-release excitement?

A Tail of Two Planes | The Plucky Squire Game Review

If you are someone who misses the days of the classic puzzle platformer, I have good news for you. Indie studio, All Possible Futures has released a game that combines collectables, puzzles, and great storytelling and shoved it into a game that mixes 2D and 3D landscapes.

Take control of Jot, the plucky squire, to save the land of Mojo. The evil wizard Humpgrump has learned the secret of the land: they live in a storybook! Knowing his destiny is to be defeated by Jot every time, Humpgrump tosses Jot from the pages of the book and overthrows the Queen of the lands.

Pair up with Violet the mage and Thrash the muscle to travel throughout the world and battle for the safety of the story. The power of friendship (and a sword) will help you through your travels. Puzzles and bosses will block your path, but Jot can handle it! Sentences are scattered along the ground, swap some words around and clear your way to victory!

Each member of the gang will help take on a boss on your way to fight Humpgrump. Level up your skills my buying new attacks and powering them up, you will find shops that you can buy both the power ups and one of the collectibles.

There are two types of collectibles in The Plucky Squire. One are the Glitchbirds, 10 little guys hidden among the world. The other are art pieces scattered between shops and the world. I love how unique these art pieces are, they are concept arts that are either scrapped ideas or past versions of the characters.

The creativity really shines in this game. Taking the concept of a storybook inside a child’s bedroom and using that to shift between the book’s 2D planes and the desk’s 3D planes is something I loved. It made The Plucky Squire stand out whenever I was looking at the trailers.
