The Best Non-Horror Game For October | Luigi’s Mansion 3
The beautiful and eerie adventure to play for October
If you want to get into the Halloween mood, but don’t want to play a horror game, you will want to try out Luigi’s Mansion 3. If you have not already played this game, you are missing out on one of the most beautiful games on the Nintendo Switch.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 has you playing as the younger Mario brother, armed with only a vacuum and anxiety! Explore a massive mansion featuring unique themes, fight ghosts by flinging them around the room with your trusty vacuum, and journey to rescue your friends.
The combat system is simple. Blast ghosts with light to freeze them before slamming them into the ground. All of the battles break down into this stun and slam method, so most people will be able to pick it up quickly.
Each floor has its own aesthetic that feels incredibly well-developed. The attention to detail makes this game shine and stand out in comparison to all other Nintendo first-party games. From sand moving around Luigi to the animation of minor movements, it is easy to see how much time and polish was given to this title.
For those who want a story, this might not scratch that itch. The only real plot here is that Mario and friends have been taken hostage in this mysterious mansion and it’s up to Luigi (and Gooigi) to save them!
Why is this the perfect non-horror game?
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is not a challenging game. It is something that you can knock out in a single night, or over the course of a week. You can pass time by exploring every single pixel on the screen, hidden interactions with the physics is always a treat to discover. The setting never strays close to a horror theme, but with Luigi always shaking in fear, it is clear that (at least for him) the mansion is unsettling. This is the most Halloween-coded game that does not make me jump. I don’t love using the word “spooky” (it’s used so often that it starts to mean nothing to an audience) but this fits the word so well!
If you own a Switch and somehow have never tried Luigi’s Mansion 3, you have to give it a try this October!
