Avatar Legends as an intro to D&D

Avatar Legends: a simpler way to try out a D&D-like experience.

Avatar Legends as an intro to D&D

One thing that my friends and I have wanted to get into for a while is get into D&D. We want the full experience: creating our own characters, giving elaborate backstories, and traveling together on adventures where we took the story the DM carefully plotted and fuck everything up. Of course, getting into this huge game with decades of knowledge shoved into dozens of books, we couldn’t just jump into the real deal. Instead, we used a new game called Avatar Legends to get us started.

Avatar Legends takes the IP from the popular animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender and combines the gameplay loop of Dungeons and Dragons. Our group of friends views this as a perfect stepping stone to full-fledged D&D. The game box comes with everything a group will need: full stories for the DM to base adventures on, guides for different character types to help craft a custom character, and a list of moves and effects that take place and occur during combat.

With the assistance given to players, even we were able to go on an adventure and feel completely immersed in the little world we created. Everyone handcrafted a character that blended in with the region of their choice from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender show. Having the shared knowledge of the show made it easier as we didn’t have to fully dive into a new world.

The setup is easy, and just like any other role-playing game, you can have a story that goes on for as long, or short, as you want. If you just want to test it out with a one-shot hour-long journey through a town, you can do that. If you want to craft an in-depth, years-long storyline that splits off depending on the choices of the party members. The best part about crafting your own journey is that anything can happen. If you start a mission with four people and a fifth comes along a few sessions in, you can just write them into the story, and poof you just have gained a new party member.

This game is brilliant for anyone who is a fan of tabletop role-playing games and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Each item in the box is crafted with care. This team that started funding this game off Kickstarter put so much love for the IP into this so that other people who loved the show could enjoy it. So that other people can experience a journey in the world in a different way than just re-watching the show one more time.
